Top 10 amazing wonders in Indonesia Java – Volcanoes

Indonesia Java is home to some of the most stunning volcanoes in the world.

Mount Bromo

The most famous and the most spectacular is Mount Bromo.

With stunning views of an entire cluster of volcanoes, and an active crater which can be viewed up close this is the climax of any East Java Tour.

The highlights of the park are the sunrise, jeep ride in the sea of sand, and a hike to the volcano crater.

Mount Ijen

The Kawah Ijen volcano and crater lake in Banyuwangi is hands down one of the world’s most spectacular sights.

The lake at Ijen Crater is the biggest acid lake in the world, and it’s also famous for a crazy phenomenon known as the ‘Kawah Ijen blue fire’, where you can see hot blue flame burning like lava in the dark!

Papandayan in West Java

It is active volcano which last erupted in 2002 and is the source of good natural medicinal mineral spring water for the spas in Garut.  It can be explored by a 2 hour trek. The natural hot spring at the source is definitely worth the effort – apart from exploring the dead forest left by the eruption of 2002.  It is also a popular camping ground – less demanding than the 6-hours trek required for Mount Cikuray summit camping.

Top 10 amazing wonders in Indonesia Java – Green Canyons

The first time i saw it, i was greatly thrilled that we have in Asia something as wonderful as the green fyords of Norway.

I just literally dived in, let go of all my inhibitions and fears of height and depth – enjoyed being tarzan for a day at my ripe old age 0f 68.

Swimming against the rushing, swirling waters, flowing along with it, soaking in clear green waters filtered by mother earth was wonderful.

Top 10 amazing wonders in Indonesia Java – Waterfalls

Indonesia Java is home to some of the most stunning waterfalls in the world.

Tumpak Sewu

It is called a waterfall, but it’s more like a thousand waterfalls put together, which is why the name loosely translated from the local Java language means ‘many waterfalls.’

The falls thunder down into a horseshoe shaped jungle ravine that looks like something right out of Jurassic Park.

Madakaripura

Known locally as Kabut Pelangi the waterfall crashes down into the amphitheater below, which is covered in lush green plants.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful hike or an adrenaline-filled adventure, Java has something for everyone.

Top 10 amazing wonders in Indonesia Java- nature hikes

Indonesia Java has the best hikes, featuring smoking volcano craters, giant waterfalls, green rice fields and terraces,  magnificent jungles, and exotic wildlife that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth.

Numerous camp sites all over Java testifies to the abundance of places of getting up close with nature.  Java numerous volcanoes create vistas of beautiful landscapes: up in the clouds, down in the valley or below ground in the case of caves and canyons.

Mount Bromo Hike

Mount Bromo is an epic Indonesia volcano  in East Java, with stunning views of an entire cluster of volcanoes, as well as an active crater you can climb for close up views.

The highlights of the park are the sunrise, jeep ride in the sea of sand, and hike to the volcano crater.

The full hike to the top of the Mount Bromo crater (starting from the sea of sand) takes about 1 hour, although you can speed it up if you ride a horse partway.

The last part of the hike has to be done on foot, and it’s a short but steep climb up a concrete stairway to the top of the crater.

Kawah Ijen Hike

The hike to the Kawah Ijen volcano is all dirt and fairly steep, but the path is well defined and safe.

In total, the hike to see the lake takes about 1.5 hours depending on your pace.

A tour guide is not required for the hike, although it can be helpful to have one if you want to see the Kawah Ijen blue fire, which requires a midnight start, a gas mask, and some extra hiking time to go down inside of the crater.

Tumpak Sewu Hike

Your first stop  is a panorama point which serves as the main overlook, where you can see the falls from above. This is an awesome viewpoint, especially if you have a drone to send up even higher.

Don’t stay at the overlook too long, because you still have to see the waterfall from below! The best lighting for this is early in the morning before the sun gets high, otherwise taking the right photos can be more of a challenge.

After you have done admiring the falls from above, there’s a hiking path to go down and see the waterfall up close.

Head down the path for about 20 minutes to reach the bottom of the ravine. The path is mostly bamboo steps with bamboo railings, and it’s a little sketchy in spots, but nothing too terrible. Just proceed carefully.

Once you reach the bottom of the ravine, you’re only a 5-10 minute walk away from the main event.

There’s one shallow stream to cross, with a small bridge covering part of it. Cross the bridge, round the corner, and prepare to have your mind blown by the epic sight! This is when the scale hits you for the first time and you can’t help but feel ant-like.

West Java Hikes

In West Java, 3 summits are within easy reach of Garut: Papandayan, Cikuray and Guntur. They are easily accessible for hiking, trekking and camping. The best thing about Papandayan is, you can soak yourself silly in hot natural mineral rich spring water direct at the source.  Cikuray is a more challenging trek but

Just 3 hours down south, in the outskirts of seaside resort of Pangandaran you can body surf or kayak in the numerous green waters of natural canyons.

Rice field hikes

Tegallalang

11km out of Ubud, it requires you to climb down (and back up) steep steps to the rice fields and terraces below. Once down you can wander about the maze of slender paths around the rice paddies or follow designated trek all the way to the end and back. Opens at 8am

Jatiluwih

It is further from Ubud (41km) but well worth the drive or ride through roller coaster hilly roads and long stretches of rice field views. Once on top of the valley the view down is breathtaking with the mountains behind. Unlike in Tegallalang this place is much better organized and detailed maps and information for short or long walks is available. The hotels, villas and restaurants are of course picturesque with the rice fields and mountain vistas.

Sidemen

The rice fields here are everywhere – not for gawking but are the livelihood of the village. Sidemen is Ubud 20 years ago before been swarmed by tourists – an ideal place to rewind, recharge.
