It is an epic Indonesia volcano hike in East Java, with stunning views of an entire cluster of volcanoes, as well as an active crater you can climb for close up views.
The highlights of the park are the sunrise, jeep ride in the sea of sand, and hike to the volcano crater.
The full hike to the top of the Mount Bromo crater (starting from the sea of sand) takes about 1 hour, although you can speed it up if you ride a horse partway.
The last part of the hike has to be done on foot, and it’s a short but steep climb up a concrete stairway to the top of the crater.
On the way up on the east side is Teletubbies Savanna – a vast meadow and majestic hill, a peaceful secluded location and beautiful landscape.
The local festival, Kasodo is done annually: people throw fried chicken, vegetables, and even money into the crater of Bromo.

Fly to Surabaya, take a train to Malang (2 hours). From Malang drive to Bromo – on the way can check out Jordipan (a slum turned rainbow village) or try paragliding (piggy backed) or explore the tallest waterfall in SEA – madakaripura or the most spectacular one Tumpak Sewu. That’s easily a 2 days trip and to cap it off continue on to Mount Ijen to see once to witness once-in-a-lifetime-not-anywhere-else phenomena – flickering blue flames on a volcanic crater.

Either walk and ride on horse back to the stair case that takes you up to the crater top; look down on a hissing bubbling active volcano. Then hop on your jeep and race the other jeeps on the sandy valley highway to catch up on your breakfast at your hotel below Mount Bromo.
